Illustration Friday - Cocoon

White Dwarf Cocoon
acrylic ink on paper

When stars begin to die they shed their outer layer in the process of becoming a white dwarf.  The expelled outer layer is called a cocoon.  Our own sun will be at this stage in about 5 billion years.

  3. Hi Sally, thanks for your comment!
I had no idea what this is or what it would look like but your image is very suggestive. I guess we don't have to worry for the next 5 billion years though... ; )
